From 7 to 13 November in the capital of Jordan, in the city of Amman, a ticket to the first division of the Asian Cup in basketball among women's teams will be held, in which the national team of Kazakhstan will take part.

The Women's Asia Cup - is the most prestigious international basketball tournament for women's national teams in Asia, which has been held every two years since 1965 under the auspices of FIBA Asia. It is the qualifying tournament for the Asian teams for the World Cup and the Olympic Games.

As part of the upcoming tournament, Division B teams will compete for the right to participate in the 2023 Asian Cup main draw. The winners will take the place of the Indian national team, which this year finished in last place in the Asian Cup 2021, also held in Jordan. The current champions are the Japanese national team, the Chinese women became the silver medalists, and the representatives of the "Green Continent" took the third place.

History of participation in the tournament.

The women's national team of Kazakhstan took part in the Asian Championship for the first time in 1994, taking 6th place at the end of the tournament. To date, this is the best result of our team on the continent, which has been achieved a total of four times:
  • 1992 - did not take part
  • 1994 - 6th place
  • 1995 - 6th place
  • 1997 - 7th place
  • 1999 - qualification canceled by FIBA
  • 2001 - 6th place
  • 2004 - did not qualify
  • 2005 - 7th place
  • 2007 - did not qualify
  • 2009 - 9th place
  • 2011 - 8th place
  • 2013 - 6th place
  • 2015 - 9th place

Rivals.

As a result of the draw, the Kazakhstani national team got into group "B", within which, in addition to our team, representatives of Indonesia and the host of the tournament - the national team of Jordan - will compete for the playoffs. In group "A" the fight will unfold between the teams of Lebanon, Iran and Syria.

This year, the composition of the teams participating in the second division promises to present intrigue due to its diversity. If the national teams of Kazakhstan and Lebanon are permanent participants in the tournament, as well as Indonesia, which played in 2011 and 2013, then Jordan has not participated since 1995, Syria since 1986, and almost 50 years have passed since Iran last applied for to participate - since 1974.

In the "strength rating" of the teams of the "B" division, published by FIBA on the eve of the start of the tournament, the national team of Kazakhstan takes 1st place, while in the official FIBA rating our team occupies 9th place in Asia and 59th in the World, behind only the Lebanese national team (Asia - 8th place, World - 53), which will play in group "A". Thus, "Steppenwolfs" are the undisputed favorites and one of the main contenders for the victory. The key motivating factor for our girls will certainly be not only the desire to play in the top division in 2023, but also to rehabilitate after the annoying defeat from India in the final of 2017, then the meeting ended with a score of 75:73.

The first rivals of our team in the group stage are the Indonesian national team (Asia - 12th place, World - 74th place). The Indonesian team played for the first time in the Asian Cup back in 1970, and in total they took part in this tournament 11 times. Their best achievement was 4th in 1972. Since the Asian Cup split into two divisions in 1990, Indonesia has never made it to the main division. At the Asian Games, the Indonesian women's team participated only once - in 2018 and was able to take 7th place. Indonesian athletes actively participate in the tournaments of their subzone - the Southeast Asian Games. At these competitions, our rivals performed more than 10 times and a couple of times became silver medalists, and the last two times they took bronze. They may well compete, as they managed to naturalize an excellent player with great strength in the person of Kim Pierre-Louis. Its presence in the composition solves the traditional problem of lack of growth in paint. However, it would be a mistake to think that Indonesia will rely solely on her input, as they have very talented players in their ranks, including the likes of Gabriel Sofia and Yuni Anggraeni.

In the second match of the group stage, the national team of Kazakhstan will meet with the hosts of the tournament - the national team of Jordan (Asia - 22nd place, World - 123rd place). The women's team from Jordan does not have much experience playing internationally. In the Asian Cup, the Jordanian team played only once - in 1995, and then they took third place in the second division. Also, the Jordanian team has in its reserve several performances at the Pan-Arab Games, where it won bronze twice. First of all, their advantage in the upcoming matches is the support of their native stands. Second, whether or not Natasha Cloud is a naturalized WNBA star, they will still need some strong homegrown players to perform well. Therefore, our coaching staff needs to pay special attention to centers Danu Fadd and Maria All-Hinn.

Tournament format.

Group stage:

The teams are divided into 2 groups - A and B, 3 in each group, in accordance with the national ranking. Teams will play in 1 round, one game between themselves within their groups. According to the results of the group stage, the teams will distribute places from 1 to 3 in their groups.

Playoffs:

According to the results of the group stage, the teams that took 1st place in their groups automatically advance to the semifinals, and their rivals will be determined in qualifying matches between the teams that took 2nd and 3rd places. The teams that lost in the qualification will play for the final 5th and 6th places. The winner of the 1st pair and the winner of the 2nd pair of the semifinals will compete for the 1st place and advancement to Division "A", and the teams that lost in the semifinals will compete for the 3rd place. At all stages of the playoffs, teams play one game in their pairs.
