FIBA Asia Cup postponed to July 2022

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and its regional office in Asia have decided to postpone the Asian Cup for men's teams to July 2022.

This decision was taken following a thorough assessment of the planning and organization of upcoming tournaments in the Asia region in consultation with the FIBA Asia Board as well as key stakeholders and partners. This assessment took into account many aspects, such as the well-being of all tournament participants, current restrictions on international travel, fan access to matches, and ensuring the highest quality of events.

As planned, the tournament will take place in the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, immediately after the Asian World Cup qualifiers. A total of 13 teams have already qualified for the main continental tournament, with the final three places to be determined in two third-place qualifiers in the second half of August 2021.

Recall that the qualifying tournament for the continental championship started in February 2020. The men's national team of Kazakhstan began its fight for a ticket to the Cup with two home matches, which were held in the city of Nur-Sultan at the new modern sports arena Zhekpe-Zhek. Then the Steppenwolfs snatched a military victory from the Palestinian team - 79:76 and slightly lost to the Jordan team - 68:71. The matches of the second playing window of the Qualifiers, which were supposed to take place in November 2020, due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, were postponed to the end of February 2021 and were held in the capital of Bahrain, the city of Manama. In the second meeting against the Palestine national team, our team confidently consolidated its success - 56:93, and both games against the Sri Lanka national team ended in an unconditional victory for Emil Rajkovic's wards - 52:111 and 107:37. In the final qualifying match of the Kazakhstan national team, unfortunately, they failed to take revenge on the Jordanians on their site - 80:70. Thus, our team qualified for the Asian Cup from the second place in the group with four victories in six matches played.

Detailed information on the participation of the National Team of Kazakhstan in the Qualification for the Asian Cup 2021, the team line-up, standings, schedule and match results are published on the Federation website in the National Teams section.
The National Basketball Federation of Kazakhstan expresses gratitude for the support and assistance in preparing the team for participation in the tournament to the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Sports Development Directorate of the Committee for Sports and Physical Culture, the National Olympic Committee, the "Samruk Kazyna" National Welfare Fund and the Tourism Industry Support Fund and "Sport Qory".
