XXIX Basketball Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan - season 2020/2021

Within the framework of the regular meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission to prevent the spread of coronovirus infection in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, it was decided to resume and hold the Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Basketball from 12 October of this year without the participation of spectators (in empty stands), provided that a high-security sanitary and disinfection regime is observed, in coordination with the chief medical officers in the field.

During the past week, the Federation made preparations for the launch of the XXIX Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan Basketball, which will take place on 20 October. It means it’s time to figure out what’s going to happen in the domestic basketball arena in the 2020/2021 season.

In the coming season, as in previous seasons, the championship will be divided into the National and High Leagues. As for the country’s women’s championship, it will also take place in one unified competition, divided into two groups. Besides the main championships, it is planned to hold annual traditional Kazakhstan Cup games among men’s and women’s teams, as well as a women’s tournament at the Federation Cup.
National League of Men’s Teams

This season, as in the past, six teams will fight for the championship title. Applications for participation in the tournament have submitted the current champions - "Astana", leaders and silver medalists of the National League - "Barsy Atyrau", the bronze medalists of last season - Kostanay "Tobol", as well as "Aktobe" and "Caspian" from Aktau, and the sixth team became, returning to the race for the title of the strongest team in the country "Almaty Legion". Kokshetau "Sinegorie" this season did not apply for participation in the Championship.

The tournament is traditionally held in two stages: the regular championship and the playoffs series. The National League Regular Championship games will be played through a system of side-by-side matches. The teams will play four matches each - two at home and two at the guests' table, for a total of 20 games in the regular championship. As a result of the regular championship, the teams ranked 1st and 4th will enter the semi-finals of the playoffs and will play the points. The Semi-final and Finals games will be played through the race system with a series of up to three victories (2+2+1).

Teams participating in the XXIX Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan in basketball among the men’s teams of the National League compulsorily participate in the Kazakhstan Cup of 2021.

While previously no more than two foreign players were allowed to play in the National League, this season’s limit will be increased to four - two of them from EEA countries and two from countries, or four athletes from EEA countries. At the same time, the technical application for the game must contain at least eight athletes entitled to compete for the national team of Kazakhstan.
The Major League of Men’s Teams

Eight teams have applied for participation in the Higher League. The six teams that participated last season - "Kazygurt", "Bars", "Ertis", Children's and Youth Sports School of Almaty region, pharmacy teams of "Almaty Legion" and "Barsov Atyrau" - were joined by newcomers to the league - the second team of "Aktobe" and debutants from Karaganda region - "Karaganda".

As in the previous season, the Major League draw will take place under the system of "smooth championship" without the final series of the playoffs. A total of six rounds are planned, each with teams playing in a circle. All teams will hold 28 matches in the season, on the basis of which the winner of the Major League will be determined.
 
The team - the winner of the XXVIII Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan in basketball among the men’s teams of the Higher League, is obliged to take part in the draw of the Kazakhstan Cup of 2021.

Within the framework of the Higher League, two foreign athletes are entitled to apply for the game exclusively from EEA countries not older than 21 years. As in the National League, the technical application for the game must include at least eight athletes eligible to play for the Kazakhstan national team, three of whom are of unlimited age and the remaining five are not older than 1995. The total number of foreign athletes not entitled to compete for the national teams of Kazakhstan and only from the EEA countries is not limited in the general application for the season.
 
The schedule of tours till the end of 2020:
  • 1st round, teams will be divided into two groups:
    • Group "A": "Aktobe 2", "Bars", "Bars Atyrau 2" and "Karaganda" - from 23 to 29 October 2020 Atyrau
    • Group B: "Almaty Legion 2", "Kazygurt", "SDUSH" and "Ertis" - from October 28 to November 3, 2020 Almaty.
  • 2nd round, group "A" and group "B" will play a wall on the wall - from 19 to 22 November 2020 Shchuchinsk
  • 3rd round, group "A" and group "B" will play a wall on the wall - from 12 to 15 December 2020 Schuchinsk
The dates and venues of the remaining tours scheduled for the first half of 2021 will be further communicated. Depending on the situation with the coronavirus pandemic in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the system, dates and places of holding may be changed.
Championship of Kazakhstan among women’s teams

In the women's championship of the country this season there were also some changes in the composition of the participants. If last season there were seven teams fighting, this number increased to eight. "Astana Tigers" and "Ertis" will exhibit the same composition, also confirmed their participation "Kazygurt Mars", "Okzhetpes", SDUSH Almaty region and "Turan". As for the additions, two teams at once will join the fight for the championship title - "Caspian", which missed last season and the new team "Karaganda". As in the National League for men, this season cokeshetau "Sinegorie" did not apply for participation in the Championship.

In the first stage, scheduled to take place before the end of 2020, the teams will play two rounds in three rounds. At the end of the first stage the teams will be divided into two groups - Group «A» (1-4 place) and Group «B» (5-8 place). In the second stage, after the New Year, the teams will play within their teams four rounds, taking into account the points scored in the first stage. In each round the teams of «A» Group and «B» Group will play in one city. The teams which took the 3rd and 4th places in «B» Group on the results of the regular championship finish their participation in the Championship.

A series of playoffs will begin with 1/4 finals, with the teams that took 1st and 2nd place in Group "A" automatically passing to 1/2 finals. The teams that ranked 3rd and 4th in Group A and 1st and 2nd in Group B of the regular championship will be divided into pairs: 3rd place in Group A - 2nd place in Group B and 4th place in Group A - 1st place in Group B of the regular championship. Teams in their pairs play a series of up to 2 wins. The winning teams in their pairs will play 1 - 4 places, the losing teams finish participation in the Championship. At the end of the quarterfinals in the 1/2 finals will continue to fight 2nd place Group A - the winner of the pair 3rd place Group A - 2nd place Group B and 1st place Group A - the winner of the pair 4th place Group A - 1st place Group B. Teams in their pairs will play a series of up to 2 wins. In the Final, the winners of the semi-final pairs will play 1st place. Losers in pairs of semi-finals draw the 3rd place. Teams in their pairs will play a series of up to 3 wins.
 
Teams participating in the XXIX Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan in basketball among women’s teams compulsorily participate in the NFB Cup and the Kazakhstan Cup (Final 4-x).

There should be no more than four foreign players at a time, with no more than two players from any countries other than EEA countries. If 2 (1) foreign players from any countries are declared in the technical application for the game, then the players having the citizenship of the EEA countries must be not more than 2 (3) - or 4 players from the EEA countries without participation of foreign players from any countries other than EEA. The technical request for the game must be submitted by at least 8 persons entitled to compete for the national team of Kazakhstan. The total number of foreign players in the season is unlimited. The minimum age of players is not less than the year of birth 2004.

  • 1st tour - from October 20 to 24, 2020 Shchuchinsk
  • 2nd tour - from 19 to 23 November 2020 Shchuchinsk
  • 3rd tour - from December 20 to 24, 2020 Shchuchinsk

With regard to the Cups, only the tentative dates for the Men’s Cup tournament, scheduled for 11-16 March 2021, have been set. In addition, on November 25-27 of this year, the dates of the Final of the Fourth Cup of Kazakhstan among men’s teams 2020, which was postponed in March due to the declaration of the state of emergency in the country, are reserved.

Women’s teams, as in previous seasons, will fight for two trophies - the Federation Cup and the Kazakhstan Cup, detailed information and dates will be determined and published after the regulations of the tournaments have been approved.
