On November 30 and December 3, the men's National team of Kazakhstan will hold two out matches within the framework of the next game "window" of the second round of the Asian qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

Our team will make the first stop in Manila, where on Friday, November 30, for the first time within the framework of the qualification, will meet with the Philippines team. The match starts at 17:30 Astana time.

The Philippines men's basketball team is a national basketball team representing the Philippines in the international basketball arena. Managed by the Philippine Basketball Association. Team has been a FIBA member since 1936. In the same year it began to take part in the Olympic Games, taking 5th place, which is the best achievement of the team. Last performed at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The debut at the World Championship in 1954 was also the most successful, compared to other world championships, while the Filipinos won bronze medals. In the Asian Championships, the Philippines national team has been participating since the very first tournament, which passed in 1960, and is currently the five-time champion, and in the overall medal standings concedes only to the Chinese team. Today, Filipinos occupy the 4th place of the FIBA Asian rating and 30th position in the World Ranking.

History of meetings: The first meeting on the floor of the teams of Kazakhstan and the Philippines was held in 1994 at the Asian Games and was unsuccessful for our team, the Filipinos won the match in the group stage with a score of 89:76. The first match against Philippines in the Asian Championship of 1997 ended with the defeat of Kazakhstanis, then in the quarter finals the Filipinos won with a 10 points advantage – 84:74. A year later, the teams met twice at the next Asian games, at the stage of the group stage, our team was fallen only one point behind the opponents – 52:53, but the fight for the bronze medals of the tournament more dramatically ended, when the Filipinos at the end of the match pulled out the victory with the score – 73:68. Already at the next Asian Games in 2002, our team had a chance to take revenge, with the bronze medals of the tournament again being at stake, which they successfully used to beat their opponents with a score of 66:68, which today is the best achievement of Kazakhstan in a personal confrontation with the Philippines national team. The next and extreme rendezvous of teams within the framework of the Asian Championship took place 15 years later – in 2013, and again in the quarterfinals the Philippines team was stronger again, then the meeting ended with a score of 88:58. The Kazakhstani national team suffered an annoying failure in the confrontation with the Filipinos at the Asian Games of 2014, losing only 2 points – 67:65. In 2016, the first and so far the only meeting of the national teams of Kazakhstan and the Philippines in the framework of the FIBA Asia Challenge 2016 tournament took place, then in the match of the second round of the group stage the victory went to the opponents of our team – 98:86. The last time our team measured their strength against the Filipinos this year, at the Asian Games, showed the worst result in the history of meetings with a loss with a difference of 37 points – 59:96.

Qualification for the World Cup: as for the performance of the Philippines national team in qualifying, our future rivals overcame the first round quite confidently, losing only two of the six matches, both of which are the leaders of their group and the current round – the Australian team. The remaining meetings ended with a slight advantage of the Philippines team, except for the game with Chinese Taipei, following which their opponents were fallen behind by 22 points – 71:93. In the first match of the second round, the Filipinos failed to cope with the Iranian national team, losing with the score – 81:73, but regained third place in the group after defeating Qatar in the second match, which ended with the score – 92:81.

Of course, in the upcoming match, the obvious favorite is the Philippines national team. Nevertheless, this meeting is doubly principled. First, the Kazakhstanis need victory points as air to continue the fight for a ticket to the World Cup, and secondly, it is a good chance to open an account of victories in a personal confrontation.
After meeting with the Filipinos, our squad will immediately go to the Japanese city of Toyama, where on December 3 they will try to take revenge on the Japanese team for the defeat in their home match, which took place on September 13 in the southern capital. Then the representatives of the Land of the Rising Sun bypassed our guys by 15 points and won with a score of 70:85, so in the upcoming meeting, the wards of Renatas Kurilionokas will need to exert maximum efforts, because at this time the sixth player will be on the side of the opponents. The match starts at 16:00 Astana time.

Recall that in the first round, the Kazakhstan team went to the second stage of the Asian Qualification, finishing second in group D, gaining 9 points. The teams that took the last places in their groups completed the participation in the tournament, and the four groups of the first round formed two groups of six teams in each group. Thus, Group B and D in the second round form Group F, which, in addition to our team, included teams from Iran and Qatar from Group D, and Australia, the Philippines and Japan from Group B. The results of the first round matches are counted in the second, due to what our national team will no longer play with Iran and Qatar. The teams will hold two meetings with each other – at home and away, that is, a total of six games. The second round itself, as well as the first one, will be held in three game "windows", two games each: in September and November 2018 and in February 2019.
