3x3 basketball originated from the popular streetball all over the world. It is considered the number one urban team sport. FIBA has embarked on its development as a second basketball discipline to attract new audiences and create new opportunities for its associations and players around the world. Having rapidly overcome the path from street entertainment to a full-fledged sport with a harmonious system of international competitions, 3x3 basketball is one of the most democratic and dynamically developing team sports.

In 2007, FIBA invited the IOC to include him in the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games. It was the first official 3x3 basketball tournament.

On June 9, 2017, at an extraordinary meeting of the IOC Executive Committee, it was decided to include 3x3 basketball in the program of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. 3x3 basketball is the first discipline that appeared at the Youth Games and was transferred to the adult Olympics program.

In 2012, FIBA created a free digital platform for the basketball community. On it, public and private companies can get help in conducting competitions, and teams can find themselves tournaments around the world.

Basketball rules 3x3 allows you to create a fast, entertaining and fun game. 12 seconds are allotted for the attack, that is, 3x3 basketball is the fastest team game in the world. A team wins if it scores more points in 10 minutes or when it scores 21 points. The game is accompanied by non-stop music, which creates a big city atmosphere and attracts young viewers.

Tournament format.

In both tournaments, a new competition system was introduced. At the first stage, 12 teams are divided into 3 groups - A, B and C, with 4 teams in each. Within the group stage, each team will play one game with all other teams in their group, that is, a total of 3 games. The teams that took 1st and 2nd places in the group stage, as well as the two best teams that took 3rd place, qualify for the final phase of the tournament. The rest of the teams will complete their participation in the competition.

After the end of the group stage, a draw will be held to determine the pairs of the quarter-finalists. The group winners and the runner-up team with the best result in the group phase are placed in one basket, and the two remaining runner-up teams and the top two third-ranked teams are placed in the second. Thus, according to the results of the draw, the Olympic play-off grid will be formed, which will start from the quarter-finals, while teams from the same group in the group stage cannot meet each other in the quarterfinals.

On the way to the main trophy of the tournament, the team must play 6 games - 3 in the group phase and 3 in the final phase (quarterfinals, semi-finals, gold medal game) instead of 8, as in previous Olympic tournaments.

Schedule of matches.

The men will be the first to race for Olympic gold on Sunday 25 July, while the women's group stage kicks off the next day on Monday 26 July. The group phase for men will last exactly one week and end on August 1, and for women a day later than August 2.

Basketball competitions at the Summer Olympics first appeared at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and have since been included in the program of each subsequent Games. Prior to that, demonstration matches of US basketball players were held at the 1904 Games. The inclusion of basketball in the Olympic program became possible after the creation in 1932 of the International Amateur Basketball Federation (FIBA). Thanks to the negotiations between the first FIBA General Secretary, Renato William Jones, and the General Secretary of the Committee for the Games of the XI Olympiad Karl Diem on board a ferry from Stockholm to Germany, on October 19, 1934, the Berlin Committee at a plenary meeting approved the inclusion of basketball in the program of the Olympic Games. By the decision of the session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on February 28, 1935 in Oslo, basketball was recognized as an Olympic sport.

The USA team became the first Olympic champion. Subsequently, US basketball players only four times lost first place in the Olympic tournaments - in 1972 and 1988 the USSR national team, in 2004 the Argentine national team and did not participate at all in 1980 due to the boycott of the games.

The decision to accept women's basketball into the program of the Olympic Games was made at the FIBA congress in Munich during the Games of the XX Olympiad. At the next 1976 Games in Montreal, a women's tournament was held for the first time.

Before the 1992 Games in Barcelona, the IOC leadership decided to allow professionals to participate. After that, the NBA and WNBA players were able to compete. The decision was made in connection with the active use of quasi-professionals by the countries of the social bloc.

On June 9, 2017, the IOC Executive Committee announced that 3x3 basketball will become the official Olympic sport at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, for both men and women.
